For those only interested in few countries, it might be better to follow the domino theory. The Euro Domino ticket offers a flexible way of unlimited travelling with 27 railway companies for three, five or ten days (during one month). Outside the chosen country you get a price reduction of 25% for neighbouring countries or countries you transit, some ferries offer 50% reduction, in your resident country you get a 25% reduction. There are no supplements except for some high speed trains like ICE, Talgo or AVE, reservations not included.

The following table shows price examples for young adults (under 26 years) in DM. Adults over 26 have to pay a higher price (20-30%) but can purchase a ticket for first class (plus 50%). As a starting point for a comparison we added a column with the total track length of the railway company:

Particularities concerning some countries:

Denmark:
Eurodomino valid for S-Train in Copenhagen and for the ferries Kalundborg – Arhus, Korsor – Nyborg, Rödby – Puttgarden and Helsingör – Helsingborg. Reservation required for trains between Fünen and Seeland.

reservations required for TGV, interrail is much cheaper!

Greece:
valid for OSE-Buses, reservations recommended.

Great Britain:
IR is cheaper.

Luxembourg:
valid for RGT-Buses

Morocco:
Euro Domino not recommended

Netherlands:
valid for all sort of public transport, no reservation necessary

Austria:
valid for various private trains

Portugal:
valid for some narrow gauge trains, buses and the Tajo ferry near Lisbon. But much too expensive!

Sweden:
valid for Helsingborg – Helsingör, reservation required for ICs.

Swiss:
the joker in Domino-Europe!

Spain:
much too expensive, extra charge in AVE!!!


Some examples for a 20 day trip: with EuroDomino you can travel all over Greece and Turkey for 268 DM plus price reduction for the ferry between Italy and Patras. Spain and Portugal would cost 652 DM! Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland (each for five days) would even cost 856 DM. All of Eastern Europe - each country for three days - would cost no more than 488 DM.
Conclusion: East and Southeast are best for Euro-Domino!

Eurotrain and Wasteels are tickets for those younger than 26 years. They give you a price reduction of 25%-35% on second class tickets between the bigger cities of Europe, in France, Morocco and Romania only 20% reduction, in Greece, Czech Republic, Slovacia 40%, in Poland and Turkey 50%, in Ireland even 60%. Good for people with a clear destination and who want to switch there to bus, bike or travel on foot.

Special national ticket offers are manifold and often confusing and differ from country to country. Check the homepages of the national railway companies. In Eastern an South Eastern Europe it's sometimes even cheaper to purchase single tickets for each trip at stations in that country, though of course it's not very comfortable to stand in a queue at each station.
